Trauma Sensitive Yoga is a treatment for survivors of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) offering effective healing and symptom reduction. It is a clinically validated method of yoga developed and researched by Bessel van der Kolk at his Trauma Centre in the US.
Trauma Sensitive Yoga has foundations in Trauma Theory, Attachment Theory, Neuroscience and Hatha Yoga practice with an emphasis on mind body connection, movement and breathing.
Trauma Sensitive Yoga creates a safe place where people can begin to reconnect with their bodies and over time clients learn to be present and begin to experience the effects of taking positive action and making choices. This gentle yoga is designed specifically for those who are already in counselling, psychotherapy, EMDR or those in close contact with their GP.
It is a workshop for health professionals, mental health workers and yoga teachers with an interest in making their current practice and classes more trauma informed.
On completion of this workshop, you will gain an understanding of the core concepts of Trauma Sensitive Yoga and techniques to implement into your current practice.
During the workshop we will explore:
- A history of complex trauma and the body
- Attachment theory and Neuroscience in relation to working with the body
- Safety: Is yoga safe? Is Trauma Sensitive Yoga different?
- The Autonomic Nervous System, stress and yoga
- Neuroscience and Yoga
- Trauma Sensitive Yoga: Interoception, Choice and Complex Trauma
- Teaching Practice: How to incorporate Trauma Sensitive Yoga into your work
- Ethical Practice and responsibility when working with clients

Equipment and Experience:
No yoga experience is required to attend this workshop, just an interest in yoga and the body.
On the day of the workshop, please wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat and blanket.
Spare yoga mats will be available on the day for you to use if you don’t have one.
This workshop is facilitated by Lorna Evans and provides 6 hours of CPD.
This workshop is not designed to qualify participants to be a trauma sensitive yoga teacher, yoga teacher, yoga therapist, mindfulness instructor, or trauma therapist. Instead, the workshop seeks to provide knowledge and skills to enhance the existing skills of therapists or yoga teachers within their existing scope of practice. Further training and support via supervision or personal therapy is always recommended when integrating new approaches into one’s existing work.
