Body Talk – Working with the Unspoken in Therapy
A workshop for counsellors and therapists interested in deeply exploring body awareness in therapy and illuminating working with non-verbal phenomena and countertransference
This training workshop is back by popular demand……………
Mind and body are fully integrated and what the therapist notices in the client’s body, or experiences in his/her own body, energy, tension, holding or other non-verbal phenomena is vital to bring into awareness and into the work with our clients.
Today, our clinical work with traumatised and abused clients, both adult and child, coupled with recent neuroscience research, emphasises how trauma is held in the body and how bodily understanding is essential for working with such issues in therapy today.
This workshop will deeply explore body awareness in therapy and illuminate working with non-verbal phenomena and countertransference. We will draw on a range of body psychotherapy theory, clinical examples and group discussions, whilst reflecting on the therapists felt countertransference in her own body.
We will incorporate a newer understanding of the autonomic nervous system, the breath and felt energy in the body as key pillars of the day.
During the workshop we will explore:
The history of phenomenology and body awareness in psychotherapy including: Reich, Gestalt and Freud
The Autonomic Nervous System
Contemporary psychotherapeutic literature exploring trauma related bodywork including: Bessel van der Kolk, Steven Porges, Peter Levine, Pat Ogden, Daniel Siegal
Body countertransference as felt by contemporary psychotherapists including: Nick Totton, Babette Rothschild, Susie Orbach
Befriending the body: Techniques to become safely aware of physical sensations and establishing synchronicity, agency and meaningful connections
Healing and learning from neuroscience: Establishing a sense of self and community, through yoga, meditation, theater, music, movement, vocalization, and psychodrama
Therapists attending this workshop will take away the following tools for use in their clinical practice:
- A deeper understanding of the Autonomic Nervous System
- A deeper understanding of core body psychotherapy theory
- New techniques to work with non-verbal phenomena in their own clinical practice
- Counter transference awareness and how to incorporate this knowledge into clinical practice

This workshop is facilitated by Lorna Evans and provides 6 hours of CPD.
