Sharon has 12 years’ experience of counselling children, young people and adults. She is a professional member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the BACP for Children and Young People.
Sharon has vast experience of working with children and young people who have or who are, suffering from distress / trauma caused by a variety of events such as; physical, mental, emotional or sexual abuse, bereavement or loss, bullying, or any ongoing anxiety issue such as; depression, low self-esteem, any of which can make it difficult to function/cope with everyday life. This list is not exhaustive, so please get in touch with us whatever the issue is that is giving you concern. Sharon works with children from the ages of 9 or over.
It can be difficult for a parent or main carer to think their child won’t talk to them, and as a parent / carer you can sometimes feel helpless. Often the child or young person feel unable to communicate with the people closest to them because of fear they will hurt their feelings, and as a result both the child / young person and parent /carer can feel trapped in a stalemate position with no obvious way to resolve the situation.
Through the years, Sharon has learned children and young people are the experts at knowing what helps them or what doesn’t, because every person regardless of age, is an individual and unique.
It isn’t always easy even for an adult person to talk and find the words to describe how they are feeling, or in the beginning to trust someone enough to say those words out loud. This can be even harder for children or young adults, so for those clients she has a variety of other skills and techniques and mediums she uses in addition to talking therapies, that can help to build trust and enable that person to communicate in whatever ways that are most comfortable to them.
Utilising her many years of experience working in G.P. surgeries, schools, bereavement, victim support, and specialist projects, and the many professional qualifications gained, Sharon builds trust with the client and then you work together to get the client into a better place, and where needed or required, Sharon can work with the client and main carer to give them the tools to cement those improvements into place, using therapies such as Thera play® skills, to re-establish and strengthen the bonds and trust between the client and main carer.
