Working with Couples – 6 day Programme 2023
A 3 weekend course created specifically for trained and experienced therapists, seeking to add the theory and skills of relationship and couple counselling to their existing skill set.
Counselling Psychology in Newcastle upon Tyne’s Jesmond Therapy Centre is available for both adults and children aged over the age of 9.
Counselling psychologists work to alleviate psychological distress and enhance psychological wellbeing. At the core of Counselling psychology is the therapeutic relationship which endeavours to facilitate positive and sustainable change. As integrative practitioners, Counselling psychologists may draw upon a range of relevant psychological theory and therapeutic approaches to best meet your therapeutic needs. This may include cognitive behavioural therapy, psychodynamic and person-centred approaches.
The initial session(s) for Counselling Psychology with a Counselling psychologist will focus on assessment and formulation. The assessment involves the psychologist gathering information about what has led you to seek psychological support and the difficulties you are experiencing. Often this involves exploring your mood, thoughts and feelings in addition to life experiences that may have impacted upon these.
The assessment may span up to three sessions depending upon the complexity of the issues you are experiencing. The Counselling psychologist will then use the information gathered during the assessment to formulate. Formulation is a way of putting all the jigsaw pieces of the assessment together and drawing upon psychological theory to develop a shared understanding about the difficulties that you are experiencing.
Assessment and formulation are core components of your therapeutic journey as this process enables you to establish what you feel is most important to work on and identify your goals for therapy. In turn, this helps you and the psychologist to decide how best to meet your therapeutic needs by developing a treatment plan.
A treatment plan is used to guide your therapeutic journey and is informed by relevant psychological theory and best practice guidelines. Importantly, a treatment plan is tailored to meet your individual therapeutic needs and is a collaborative process.
Seeking support from a Counselling psychologist will afford you a greater understanding about the difficulties you are experiencing which in turn will help to alleviate your distress, enhance your psychological wellbeing and foster a sense of empowerment.
Psychologists work a diverse range of emotional health issues and significant life events including depression and anxiety, eating disorders, psychosis, ‘personality disorder’, negative life events, bereavement, domestic violence, sexual, emotional and physical abuse, trauma and relationship issues.
