Counsellor - Adults and Children over 9 yrs

Linda is a Counsellor working with adults, children and young people.

Going to see a counsellor can feel intimidating and for some it can be difficult to find the words to express their feelings and emotions. Our work together can be flexible and creative to help with this and she offers you a confidential space, were you will work at your pace.

Linda has over five years counselling experience, working within the voluntary sector, education and in my private practice. She has experience of working with adults, children and young people.

Linda’s core ethos is in the Person-Centred approach and Linda believes that each person experiences is unique. As well as Person Centred Therapy, she can offer Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness and Play Therapy approaches depending on your needs.

Person Centred: Person-centred counselling is non-directive therapy. Linda sees you as expert on yourself and Linda believes that the answers are within yourself and her role within counselling is to be beside you, supportive and understanding. The therapeutic relationship can provide you with a place to feel truly accepted, heard and understood in a non-judgemental and empathic environment

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): The approach of CBT is about looking at how you can get stuck in patterns of behaviour and ways of changing these rather than dwelling on past events. You will work on a goal or goals to facilitating positive change, often with ‘homework’ to do in between sessions. and challenge you when appropriate.

Mindfulness: Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to what is happening right here, right now. When you are being mindful you are aware of your thoughts, feelings, and sensations and you experience them directly, rather than thinking about them. This can change the impact thoughts and feelings have and our experience of life. It is an effective way to increase calmness and to alleviate anxiety and depression.

Linda may use Mindfulness in combination with Person Centred Counselling and or the C.B.T.

Working with Children and Young People   

As with the adults, Linda core ethos is in the Person-Centred approach and I believe that each person experiences are unique. As well as Person Centred Therapy, Linda can offer Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness and Play Therapy depending on your needs.

Sometimes younger children can find it difficult to find the words to tell their story and creative working. Linda may use play, and art/crafts materials to offer them a way to express, understand, explore their issues, in a safe and secure environment. These are usually be led by the child.

Older children and young people are also given the space they need to explore their feelings and thoughts creatively. This can depend on what they would like to do in the sessions, as the session will be led by them.

Many young people struggle with how they feel. They may be having problems with friends, family or school, they feel anxious, depressed, angry or scared and need to talk to someone, but find it difficult to talk to people they know. Counselling can help them talk things through, support them without making them feel judged, and in confidence

Linda is able to offer guidance and support to parents/carers, to help them understand the child/younger persons behaviour, however this will be done in the limits of confidentiality. Linda  works with children aged 9 to 18.

Qualifications and Training

BA (Hons) in Counselling C.B.T Model (Teesside University)

Foundation degree in Counselling Person Centred Model (Leeds Metropolitan University)

Level Three foundation course in counselling skills for working with children (Place2be)

Level Two helping skills (New College Durham)
