Sports massage uses deep tissue massage techniques to manage, manipulate and rehabilitate the soft tissues of the body including muscles, tendons and ligaments.
A sports massage is a good choice if you have a specific problem i.e. tight muscles in the upper back, however you don’t have to be an athlete to benefit from sports massage. Sports massage is also good for people with soft tissue injuries, muscle tension, chronic pain or restricted range of motion. It is a treatment where the massage therapist will concentrate on a specific problem area rather than a full body massage.
What does the Therapy involve?
Following an initial consultation, where the therapist will ask you about your area of pain or discomfort or reasons for seeking a sports massage, you may be asked to remove your clothing so that the therapist can work directly onto your skin. You will lie on a comfortable therapy bed and will be draped with towels or sheets where necessary to ensure your modesty.
In a Sports massage the therapist generally focuses on the problem area i.e. a pulled hamstring, a frozen shoulder or area of pain or discomfort. Using Swedish massage techniques as the basis for the massage, the therapist will apply oil to the skin and will gently warm up the skin and muscles to begin with. Depending upon the problem area, a range of movements will be incorporated into the massage including gliding strokes, kneading movements, circular pressure of the hand and fingers, vibratory movements, brisk tapping and bending and stretching. The therapist may also use additional techniques specifically designed to prevent and treat sports injuries.
A sports massage can be carried out prior to a sports event to stimulate circulation, calm the nerves and prepare you for optimal performance or after a sports event, when it will relieve soreness and swelling and assist with the removal of lactic acid and other waste products. It may also be used during training, to help speed up the healing of existing injuries and prevent the development of future injuries.
