Reflexology is a natural healing art, based on the principle that the feet are a map for the whole body.
In Reflexology, the belief is that there is a system of zones and reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to each organ, gland and structure of the body. By stimulating these reflexes, imbalances in the body can be detected and then brought back into balance.
Reflexology works by applying pressure on relevant parts of the feet and hands to deliver a specialised routine which has a therapeutic effect on the natural energy pathways or reflex zones of the body. This is a holistic treatment that balances the entire person.
What does the Therapy involve?
During the initial treatment, the therapist will make a visual examination of your feet and will ask about any conditions or pain which could hinder treatment. You will be asked to lie down on a therapy bed, remaining fully clothed, with the exception of your footwear and socks.
The therapist will begin by cleansing your feet, sometimes soaking them in warm water. They will then position themselves at the end of the bed with your feet at their chest level. Reflexology treatment is given with the hands using a pressure technique applied to the whole foot.
The session will begin with a relaxing foot massage, followed by precise reflexology massage movements, in which the therapist will apply a gentle pressure using the thumb and fingers, starting at the toes and working down the foot. If a client presents with a specific condition, the therapist can carefully feel and work the reflex area of the foot corresponding to the presenting problem. When a reflex point is touched associated with a problem area, some discomfort may be felt in that part of the foot.
The therapist will work on all areas of the foot to release congestion, stimulate circulation and bring about a sense of calm and wellbeing, promoting a relaxation response in the entire body.
You can rest or talk during the reflexology session at your discretion. The treatment is often so relaxing you may fall asleep, however you will still receive the benefits of the treatment.
A course of 4 -5 treatments is generally recommended.
