Aromatherapy massage is a treatment combining the therapeutic benefits of touch and pure essential oils. It is a slow, soft and soothing massage treatment using a mixture of essential oils blended especially for the client’s individual needs.
Essential oils are made from flowers, trees, grasses and shrubs and their fruits, blooms, stems and roots and they possess wonderful intoxicating aromas. The oils are usually steam distilled and they all possess unique properties. The hormones and the enzymes within the essential oils work with our own to bring about therapeutic benefits.
Aromatherapy massage and essential oil blends are adapted to suit the needs of the client and are often used to address stress related symptoms such as anxiety, depression, muscle aches and pains and sleep problems. However there are many other uses for essential oils.
Home treatment, with advice from the therapist, can be carried out between massages using oil burners, diffusers, bathing using essential oils and the application of body oils and lotions.
What does the Therapy involve?
During your initial consultation, the therapist will talk to you about your aromatherapy massage needs and will ask you about any injuries or conditions that you may have. You will be asked to undress (apart from underwear) and lie on a comfortable therapy bed. You will be draped with towels or sheets to ensure your modesty. The therapist will then blend the appropriate essential oils with a carrier oil such as sweet almond or grapeseed oil ready for your treatment. Some of the widely used oils include:
- Lavender, chamomile – for calming
- Ylang yland, bergamot, neroli – for upifting
- Rosemary, peppermint – for energising
- Eucalyptus, tea tree – for decongesting
Your personalized aromatherapy blend is then applied to the skin using traditional body massage which involves slow and soft massage strokes to the whole body including back, legs, arms, face and scalp.
